Sermon: God’s Gift Opening

A gift opening is about unwrapping gifts.  Many of you have been to a gift opening after a wedding, and of course, we all just engaged in a gift opening at Christmas.  The Epiphany of our Lord this past Friday, January 6th, marked the end of the 12 days of Christmas with the account of the visit of the wise men.

While Christmas is about God’s giving of the gift of Jesus, the Epiphany of our Lord and the entire Season of Epiphany is about God opening the gift so that we see who Jesus is, what He has done, and what He continues to do for the life of the world.  Think of today, the Baptism of our Lord, as God’s gift opening, the day heaven opens, the day our Father in heaven unwraps

His gift for us, opening our eyes to see that Jesus is indeed His beloved Son. It’s also opening day for Jesus, the day He is anointed and set apart to begin His work of saving us from sin and death.
