Sermon: You are Jesus’ Neighbor

The lawyer asked, “Who is my neighbor?” The answer quite literally is whoever is near. Today we learn that you are Jesus’ neighbor, that He is near to help you, to forgive you, to bind your wounds, to give you everything you need for this life and the life to come. As the apostle Paul reminds us, “The Lord is near” (Romans 4:5b). 

The Lord is near where His word is near. “The word is near you,” he says, “in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:8b-9). 

Jesus is the Good Samaritan of the parable, and today He binds up your wounds with the healing balm of His Gospel as He brings you here into His Church, where He takes care of you at His own expense.
