“Behold, your king comes to you.” He comes to you in ways the world will see as powerless and unimpressive. Jesus made his advent on a donkey. It was the ride of a slave. Jesus entered Jerusalem in humility for the same reason He was born in all humility. He came to serve, not to be served. He came to give His life as a ransom for the many. Jesus still comes to you in the way of the donkey, in lowliness and humility. He still comes to you to take from you your sin, your death, your hell, and to give to you His own righteousness. That’s why, even to this day, the Church has never stopped crying out to Him: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” So, if Christ’s Church is to be about donkey business, then we have no time for monkey business. “Behold your King!” Behold means close your eyes and open your ears. Christ confronts and challenges what your eyes want to see. You want an impressive God who dazzles you with flash and fireworks. But Jesus says, “No!” He says, “I will only come to you in the way of the donkey.” Jesus says, “Walk by faith and not by sight!” For faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1). And what does faith delight in and behold? Bible Study: Advent Gives Us God’s Insight | Mark 11:1-10 | The Triumphal Entry

Isaiah 64:1-9 - The prophet Isaiah cries out for the Lord to come down from heaven and break into our world with His awesome righteousness and salvation. He confesses his sins and the sins of his people. Before the Lord “we have all become like an unclean thing” and “we all fade like a leaf” but we, with Isaiah, pray that the Lord would not become angry with us or remember our sin. 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 - Paul confesses the faithfulness of the Lord who will sustain us until His Second Coming. Christ Jesus has given us every spiritual gift in His Gospel and Sacraments so that we might be sustained in His forgiveness to the end. Mark 11:1-10- Advent begins with Palm Sunday and the Passover prayer from Psalm 118: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” This prayer announces the coming of the true Passover Lamb, the true Son of David, and the one the prophets had long foretold. The coming of Jesus clearly announces Him as Savior—Savior of all people, Savior of all sinners who could not save themselves. Putting Jesus in the center of your life effects how you live. It puts into perspective both our promised eternal life, and our life here and now, that your Father wants you to enjoy. Not in fear or in captivity to sin, but in love and freedom from sin. To live in His image. Not to get anything from God. He’s already given you all things. But because your neighbor needs you to show them His love and care and forgiveness. Not because you have to, but because that’s who you are. You are a child of God with His Spirit working in you. And then when your brother Jesus returns, you will meet Him and enter into the joy that you have already begun to receive here. The joy of His forgiveness. The joy of His love. The joy of His freedom. The joy you enter into as your Savior comes to you already now in His Supper to give you Himself, to give you the forgiveness and life and faith you need. Bible Study: Good and Faithful Servants | Matthew 25:14-30 | The Parable of the Talents

The Day of the Lord is “near and hastening fast,” and it will be “a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation” (Zeph. 1:14, 15). The Lord will search out and punish “the men who are complacent” concerning His Word, “who fill their master’s house with violence and fraud” (Zeph. 1:9, 12). Then all their works and efforts will be for nothing: “Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them” (Zeph. 1:13). But those who fear, love and trust in the Lord are “good and faithful” stewards of His property (Matt. 25:21). They live by faith in His free gift of forgiveness, and they multiply His goods in the loving forgiveness of their neighbor, and “the Master of those servants” settles His accounts with them by the gracious reckoning of His Gospel (Matt. 25:19). Likewise, “God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5:9).
