As human beings we have five basic senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. The sensing organs associated with each sense send information to the brain to help us understand and perceive the world around us. In our text for today, the sense of hearing, sight, touch, smell, and taste are all in play. The disciples hear Jesus speak and He invites them to touch Him, and then they see with their eyes that He is indeed resurrected in the flesh. “While they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, He said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ They gave Him a piece of broiled fish, and He took it and ate it before them,” engaging the senses of both the smell of a fish boil and the taste of a fish. The disciples understand and perceive through the resurrected senses of both themselves and Jesus that Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Wounds tell a story: scraped knees tell of recklessness, scarred wrists tell of despair, and scarred souls tell of misery, but even those wounds can be taken up into Jesus’ wounds and be transformed into a part of the resurrection story. How? By what Jesus gives out in today’s Gospel reading: forgiveness of sins. As Jesus has forgiven you of all your sins, he takes those wounds of yours and brings them into his, so that you would experience the heart of Jesus—the very place of love. Anything less than entering into Jesus’ wounds and touching his heart will not do for you today because it is there in Jesus’ wounds, we see Jesus as our Lord and God and see our life in the light of his resurrection. We all come with our wounds and our fears today as did Thomas and the rest of the apostles. Today Jesus invites you to come to him and place your hands in His hands and in His side.

Today we wave our palm branches, not in imitation of those in Jerusalem that day, but in anticipation of Jesus, our King, coming again for us, and when we will wave them on that eternal day in heaven. On that day when there will be no more death, only life eternal. This is also why we sing hosanna not just today, but every Sunday, as our King comes to us not humbly on a donkey, but humbly in water, word, bread and wine. Coming to hosanna us, save us, from our sins with the forgiveness of our sins. What He accomplished for us that week is given to us here every week: forgiveness, life, and salvation.
