Sermon: A Murder Mystery

Sunday Oct 23, 2022

Sunday Oct 23, 2022

We are not here today as Cain was or as the Pharisee was saying, “God, thank you I’m not like other sinners.”  No, we’re here as the tax collector, “God, make atonement for my sins.”  “God, take my sins away.” And God does.  We are murderers.  And that’s exactly who God’s grace is for.  Bring all your jealousy and hatred and contempt - murder to the One who put it all to death on the cross.  And exchange all that sin for His good and gracious love.  Here at this altar is the atonement for your sins.  His very body and blood.  You are forgiven.  Justified.  And, like the tax collector, you may go home in peace. Thank you, Lord, that you have made us who we are—forgiven sinners.  Thank you, Lord, that you have shown us what real and true love is—not showing contempt or jealousy—but loving and serving as You have loved us.  Laying down our lives for our friends.------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Bible Study: A Murder Mystery

Thursday Oct 20, 2022

Thursday Oct 20, 2022

Jesus tells a parable “to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous” (Luke 18:9).  In this parable the Pharisee unjustly boasted before God on the basis of his own merits, whereas the tax collector intently prayed, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” (Luke 18:13). That poor miserable sinner trusted Christ, and he went “down to his house justified, rather than the other” (Luke 18:14). So do little children, “even infants,” come to Jesus with their need, and they “receive the kingdom of God” through faith (Luke 18:15–17). For “the one who humbles himself will be exalted,” but “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled” (Luke 18:14). That is why “the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering He had no regard” (Gen. 4:3–4). St. Paul's life, “poured out as a drink offering,” was another sacrifice like Abel's (2 Tim. 4:6). The Lord stood by Paul and strengthened him, that “the message might be fully proclaimed” (2 Tim. 4:17). It is by that Gospel message of Christ that we “have loved His appearing” and as repentant sinners pray to “the Lord, the righteous judge” by faith (2 Tim. 6:8).------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Lady Justice holding the Scales of Justice is one of the most recognizable symbols in the legal system. The statue of Lady Justice holding the Scales of Justice demonstrates an aura of fairness, opportunity, and justice. The characterization of Lady Justice that most are familiar with has three distinct features: a blindfold, the scales of justice, and a sword. The blindfold over Lady Justice’s eyes represents the notion of impartiality. The Scales of Justice signify that for justice to be had the weight of the evidence for and against an issue should be weighed and considered before issuing a ruling. Finally, the sword represents the authority to execute justice.  None of that is on display when it comes to the unrighteous judge of Jesus’ parable. Yet, the unrighteous judge ends up giving the persistent widow justice, not based on the law, but because he doesn’t want to be bothered.  What appears to be a mockery of justice winds up doing justice.  Similarly, God will certainly do justice, but in a way that the world will perceive as crooked. He elects the Son to be the world’s sin, to take the full brunt of the law, to be sentenced to death in our place for our sin. The question at the end of this parable is not whether the Son of Man will find justice when He comes on the Last Day. The only question is whether the Son of Man will find faith on the earth when He appears. Before God and His bar of justice, the only thing that matters, the only thing that counts as righteousness is faith in what Jesus has done for us.------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting.  “Left alone,” Jacob wrestled through the night with the Lord, “until the breaking of the day” (Gen. 32:24). Though “Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him” (Gen. 32:25), he would not let go until the Lord blessed him. At times, we, too, strive with God; He strives with us and blesses us by grace. So Jesus teaches us “always to pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1). Jesus speaks of “a judge who neither feared God nor respected man” and of a widow “who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary’” (Luke 18:2–3). Because of her persistence, the judge agreed to “give her justice” (Luke 18:5). Our Lord dispenses justice generously and swiftly, giving “justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night” (Luke 18:7). He does so according to the Gospel. Therefore, His ministers are to persevere faithfully in their vocation, in what they “have learned and have firmly believed” (2 Tim. 3:14). On the basis of “the sacred writings” (2 Tim. 3:15), they are to “preach the word” at all times and not lose heart (2 Tim. 4:2). ------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Sermon: No Drive Thru Jesus

Sunday Oct 09, 2022

Sunday Oct 09, 2022

What a life Jesus gives us! With Jesus you’re not getting a burger at a drive- thru—you’re getting a new life. What Jesus says to that one leper He says to each and every one of you here today, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.” Go with Jesus today and every day this week. Walk every step by the Spirit of God—in love and joy and patience and gentleness. See your entire world through the eyes of faith in Jesus. Because He is our world.------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Jesus comes in mercy, and by His Word heals you in body and soul. “Go and show yourselves to the priests,” for you are cleansed (Luke 17:14), and you are granted access to the Lord's Temple. It is “at Jesus' feet, giving Him thanks” (Luke 17:16), that you worship God, for Christ Jesus is your great High Priest; His Body is the true Temple. In Him you “find rest, each of you in the house of her husband” (Ruth 1:9), for the Lord has “visited His people and given them food” (Ruth 1:6). The person of Jesus Christ lodges Himself in holy food--bread and wine for believers to eat and drink. You lodge where Jesus lodges; His Father is your God, His people are your people. Death cannot part you from Him, because His death and resurrection are eternally yours through Holy Baptism. “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead” (2 Tim. 2:8–9). As surely as death could not hold Him, so surely “the Word of God is not bound” (2 Tim. 2:9). His Gospel is entrusted “to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2), so that you “may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 2:10). Such is the confession of faith for all the saints, who believe, teach, and confess the one Lord and Savior--Jesus Christ.------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting.  My wife and I enjoy hiking along paths in the mountains and woods. From time to time one of us, while failing to pay attention to ourselves due to a great view or some wildlife in the area, will trip on a rock protruding from a path. Jesus uses this image when He says in speaking of our “hike” of faith, “Temptations to sin are sure to come.” The word that Jesus uses here is the Greek word “skandalon.” It’s the word for scandal. A “skandalon” is a stick, a stone, or a rock on a path that causes a person to trip and fall. Walking through the rocky, uneven path of this life in which sin, doubt, disease, and death are strewn all over the place, there are no shortages of things that cause us to trip and fall in our “hike” of faith. “Temptations to sin are sure to come…” But just as surely, a day is coming when every temptation to sin will be gone, every ‘skandalon’ will be removed, and there will be no more falling, only rising. Rising to be welcomed home by our Lord Jesus Christ, and perfectly reconciled to God and every brother and sister in Christ. Until then, “Pay attention to yourselves!”------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. We are surrounded by “destruction and violence” (Hab. 1:3) because the Law “is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth” (Hab. 1:4). In fact, the Law cannot rescue us from our enemies; it is our fiercest enemy of all. Therefore, not by sight, experience or feeling, nor by works, “the righteous shall live by his faith” (Hab. 2:4). “Temptations to sin are sure to come” (Luke 17:1), but as often as we sin, the Lord rebukes us, turns us to repentance and forgives us. We pray that He would thus “increase our faith” (Luke 17:5). And indeed, He does! Though we are His “unworthy servants” (Luke 17:10), He prepares His Supper for us, dresses us properly and gives us His body and blood to eat and drink. He appoints pastors for us, “by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 1:1). For the Gospel brings “life and immortality to light” (2 Tim. 1:10). This we believe. Therefore, “follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard,” by which He guards you “in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 1:13).------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. :  Looks can be deceiving.  The story of the rich man and Lazarus is a perfect example of that.  By all accounts, the rich man in this story was “blessed.”  He had all that he needed and wanted and was probably held in high esteem by everyone in the community.  On the other hand, there was Lazarus.  By all appearances he was “cursed.”  He was homeless, in poor health, hungry, and living on the street.  His only companions were the dogs who came and licked his sores.  But looks can be deceiving.  For, as Jesus tells us, the man who by all accounts and appearances we thought blessed was the cursed one, and the man who we thought cursed was the blessed one!  So how do we know who is blessed and who is cursed?  How do we know if what our eyes tell us is right or wrong?  We know by our ears.  The Word of God will always tell us the truth despite appearances; despite what our thoughts or emotions might tell us; despite the opinions of those around us.  The Word of God says who we are.  The only question is whether we will believe what the Word of God says or not.------------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting.
