Sermon: Jesus is the Open Door

: Jesus is the door to eternal life. And to pass through this door, you do not need to be the best, or the smartest, or the most devoted, or meet a certain criteria. You need only be in Him. In Jesus, the One who takes you from earth to heaven. If we try to approach heaven apart from Him, on our own, on the basis of our own merits or achievements, then it is the words we heard in the Holy Gospel that will be spoken to us: “I do not know where you come from.” But the door is open for those who come in Jesus, in His cross, in His death and resurrection. For these God knows. And those who come in these, God knows. For as we have lived in these, through confession and repentance, through forgiveness and the life our Savior gives, He has known us all along. Bible Study: Jesus is the Open Door

With the cross of Christ, the time has come “to gather all nations and tongues” (Is. 66:18). The sign of the cross is set forth in the preaching of the Gospel, the declaration of the Lord's glory “among the nations” (Is. 66:19). Many “will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God” (Luke 13:29), but only by the narrow way of the cross. Those who refuse to follow Christ crucified will ultimately find only “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Luke 13:28), whereas Christ's disciples, called from all the nations, will eat and drink with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of God. Feel like it’s time to throw in the towel? Like you just can’t trust in the Lord anymore? Tempted to live as if you’re not died for? Enticed to live as if you’re not baptized? Are you lured to abandon the divine service altogether? Want to stop running and give up? Well, you are surrounded. The Lord says you are surrounded. And his word is much different than the police. Not a word of surrender or giving up but one of hope. The Lord Jesus gives you a word so that you do not grow weary. Bible Study: You are Surrounded!

The Lord Jesus causes fear and trembling and division because His Word is “like fire … and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces” (Jer. 23:29). His Law puts us all to death, whereas only His Gospel can bring us to life. He has fulfilled that Word for us by His cross and in His resurrection from the dead. He undergoes such a distressing Baptism, accomplished by His death, in order to open the way for us through our Holy Baptism into His cross and resurrection. So, then, if we are able “to interpret the appearance of earth and sky” (Luke 12:56), let us mark this sign of His cross — recognizing that this world is subject to death, but knowing that Christ Jesus also has conquered death and obtained life everlasting for us. Sermon: The Rich Man’s Story

The rich man’s story in the parable is set within chronological time.  He spends his time seeking to lay up an abundance of treasures for himself, covetous for the for the things of this world. Once he has them his plan is to stockpile them so that he can “eat, drink, and be merry” for years to come.  But like a click on a stopwatch, his life ends that very night.  He’s a fool. Bible Study: The Rich Man’s Story

To live for earthly things “is vanity and a striving after wind,” and work that is driven by such vanity “is an unhappy business” (Eccl. 1:13–14). The man who lives like that has nothing to show for “all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun … all his days are full of sorrow” (Eccl. 2:22–23). So, too, your “covetousness, which is idolatry” (Col. 3:5), makes a god out of that which cannot give you life or happiness. For “one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). But “Christ who is your life” (Col. 3:4), in giving you Himself, gives you all the wealth of heaven. Sermon: Praying with Chutzpah!

: I grew up in a Lutheran home. We went to church faithfully and I was taught the catechism and the liturgy and hymnody of the church. I was taught to pray before I went to bed. One of the prayers that I prayed for years is that God would bless me by giving me a faithful and loving Christian wife.  God answered my prayer and He gave me a beautiful wife, a Christian wife who is a good theologian to boot, something most important for a man in the ministry.  God gave me more than I prayed for. Another example from my childhood: I always thought it would be cool to have a little brother or sister.  I prayed.  It never happened. But God answered my prayer in a way I would never have imagined. He gave me three sons and three daughters who are more than brothers and sisters.  Of course, these are pleasant examples of God giving us more than we pray for. Sometimes He gives surprise answers to our prayers after we have suffered, like the Canaanite woman or the man at the pool or those struggling Christians suffering under persecution. But whenever and however He answers, He gives us more and better than we deserve or ask. He strengthens us, makes us grow in grace and become better theologians. As the hymn writer puts it: “God knows full when times of gladness Shall be the needful thing for thee. When He has tried thy soul with sadness And from all guile has found thee free, He comes to thee all unaware And makes thee own His loving care,” (LSB 750 stanza 4). But does that really happen? Always? How many demons possessed and cripples never saw Jesus and were never healed? How many warring Christians have never reconciled with each other? How many faithful pastors have prayed for their congregation to grow and it never has? How many poor wives pray that their husbands quit beating them, and they never do?  How many times have we prayed for the violence and racism to stop and it doesn’t?  How often have we prayed for someone to be healed and they only die? Have all the prayers of these Christians been answered?  Yes, or they will be, even if  it has to be eschatologically or in the last days.  God is giving us what we should have been asking for all along - and really were when we were praying our Lord’s Prayer - namely, forgiveness, salvation, fortitude, patience, and love, along with the intricate composite of all the blessings and sufferings which make us Christians. We hunger and thirst for all that we request in prayer, because the Word of God has promised exactly those things to us.
