How great is your sin? How vast the emptiness of your hands? Your Lord fills you now with His forgiveness and life. Not a little, but an abundance! I forgive you all your sins, He said. And all means all. Not one left that you have to make up for. Not one left to weigh you down. Not one left to shame you or humiliate you or make you doubt. The cross has cancelled all your sin, so that you have the joy of forgiveness overflowing. So that when life has you wrung out and hung out to dry, you be here refreshed and raised again. And that’s what happens to those seven disciples. From empty to filled, John calls out in joy to Peter, “It is the Lord!” And Peter, from sorrowful to joyful, jumps out of the boat to be with His Savior. And, I like to think, when Peter got to the shore, he gave Jesus a big, wet bear hug - which would have suited Jesus just fine, for that’s how He likes us: soaking wet from living in the joyful waters of our baptism. Soaking wet from jumping into those waters every day, as every day we confess our sins and receive our Lord’s forgiveness. As every day we are born again as children of God. “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain” (Rev. 5:12), who by His cross has conquered sin and death. The disciples were scared. They didn’t know what to think or what to do. The women, Peter, and John had all seen the empty tomb. Yet, if Jesus had risen from the dead then where was He? The Jews were definitely out there, and they would be coming after them next. In addition, their sin in abandoning Jesus had caused their conscience to weigh heavy on them, and it condemned them. They had been robbed of their peace, but not by anything outside or inside of them as you might think. Peace isn’t taken from us by troubles nor is it given to us by a lack of troubles. What robs us of peace is unbelief. It’s a lack of faith. It’s the thought that the bad things that are happening around us and in us are more powerful than God. It’s the thought that God cannot or will not protect us from troubles, deliver us from them, or use them for His good, and ours. Unbelief robbed the disciples of peace. Jesus knew it, and that’s why He went to them. He went there to make believers out of them. Likewise, unbelief robs us of peace. It’s why He comes here, too, by His Spirit at work through His word. On the Lord’s Day, St. John the apostle was given a revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God, the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last. He is the Living One, “the firstborn of the dead” (Rev. 1:5). He died for all people, and behold, He is alive forevermore! Therefore, He has “the keys of Death and Hades” (Rev. 1:18). For His death atoned for sin and conquered death, and in His resurrection, He opened the kingdom of heaven to us. The “sharp two- edged sword” of His mouth (Rev. 1:16) calls you to “believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,” that by such faith “you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). The Lord has promised to “create new heavens and a new earth” (Is. 65:17), in which His people shall abide in peace and joy. That new creation has begun in the bodily resurrection of Christ Jesus. All the baptized belong to that new creation. Reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, they are “the offspring of the blessed of the LORD” (Is. 65:23). The Lord rejoices and is glad in them; He hears and answers their prayers. For “if in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1 Cor. 15:19). But Christ Jesus has been raised, “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). We may be “perplexed about this” (Luke 24:4), perhaps even frightened and brought to our knees, because it seems like an “idle tale” (Luke 24:11). The King of Israel comes into His royal glory by the path of humble obedience “to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8). He “goes as it has been determined” (Luke 22:22), according to the Scriptures, willingly submitting to His Father’s plan for the salvation of sinners. “Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name” (Phil. 2:9). His suffering and death open the way of repentance for the forgiveness of sins because He goes to the cross bearing the sins of the world. In His resurrection, God the Father vindicates His people and has compassion on His servants (Deut. 32:36). He kills to make alive; He wounds in order to heal. Here’s the harsh Lenten reality: the old Adam hates to be saved. Our sinful nature resists it. We too are like those ungrateful tenants who have been given much and yet withhold the harvest from God. We too reject the prophets and their word. Oh we don’t have to beat them up, we can just tuck their books away on a shelf and ignore what they have to say to us. We too will find Jesus to be a nuisance to our own religious notions as He poked holes in our perfection, insisting on our need to repent, to be forgiven, to trust. Who really wants to be broken? Who wants to admit helplessness?  But the wonder of wonders is that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. While we were yet God’s enemies, He reconciled us to His Father. While we were no better than those murderous tenant in God’s vineyard, God made peace through the death of His beloved Son. While we were dead in our sins, dead in Adam, God made us alive to Himself in Christ – buried us with Him in Jesus’ death, raised us to life in Jesus’ resurrection, seated us in glory in Jesus. Our life and works apart from Christ, no matter how they may glitter to the eyes of the world, are ultimately rubbish and have no righteousness. Rather, in the scandalous cross of Jesus we find our righteousness alone “through faith in Christ” (Phil. 3:9). By such faith, we “know him and the power of his resurrection” (Phil. 3:10). For the same God who brought Israel out of Egypt has done a “new thing” for us in Christ Jesus (Is. 43:19).
