We live, at times, thinking about leaving our life with God behind. We may believe that being a Christian is not good, or that life apart from God is better. God knows our doubts and meets us with His teaching and sacrament, bringing us back to know and believe the life and promises that we have in Him.-----Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Your inheritance as a child of Adam is sin and death, but in Christ you are made alive through His resurrection from the dead (1 Cor. 15:21–22). As you have died with Him in Holy Baptism, so are you raised with Him to newness of life. Therefore, “do not go on sinning” (1 Cor. 15:34). Instead of serving your desires and harming your neighbors, live as “sons of the Most High,” and “be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:35–36). Deal with others as you would have others deal with you (Luke 6:31, 37–38). As Christ loved you when you were at enmity with Him, as He blessed and prayed for those who abused Him, and as He did good to those who hated Him and hurt Him, so also “love your enemies, do good” (Luke 6:27–29, 35). For God sent His Son to bear the cross and suffer death, not to condemn the guilty, but “to preserve life.” So does He provide a place for you within His Church, where He is near and deals kindly with “you and your children and your children’s children” (Gen. 45:5–10).---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. We’ve all heard the advice, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”  Today, as we examine the blessings and woes Jesus lays out for us, we would be wise not to judge a life by its cover. There is so much more going on in people’s lives than meets the eye.  Our superficial way of looking at things often leads us to miss the profound ways in which God is richly blessing us, even, and maybe especially, in suffering, or when we lack an abundance of the things of this world.  So don’t judge a life by its cover.  Things are not always as they seem. ---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. “Cursed is the man who trusts in man,” for all the strength of his flesh is like the grass that fades away (Jer. 17:5). The one who turns away from the Lord may have food and money and laugh for now, but he “shall mourn and weep” in the judgment (Luke 6:24–25). But “the man who trusts in the LORD” is blessed with all that he needs, “like a tree planted by water.” When heat comes, he survives (Jer. 17:7–8). For the Lord has come in the flesh to heal the people of all their diseases, to cleanse their spirits with forgiveness, and to preach the Gospel of the kingdom of God to the poor (Luke 6:18–20). As all of this is by way of His cross, it is solely by faith in the promise of His resurrection that Christians “rejoice” and “leap for joy” (Luke 6:21–23). “If Christ has not been raised,” our faith is in vain and we are most to be pitied (1 Cor. 15:14–19). But, in fact, just as “Christ died for our sins,” so has He also “been raised from the dead” (1 Cor. 15:3, 20).---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. If there’s one emotion, we as Christians know well, it’s despair.  We can relate to Simon Peter in today’s Gospel.  “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!”  I worked my tail off and everything still failed.  I gave my children the finest Lutheran education, devotions every night, youth group events every time they were offered, and they still rejected the Faith when they got to college, and not just rejected it, but now they’re hostile about it!  I saved and pinched pennies my entire working life and the stock market volatility seems to be spoiling my retirement, when I’m ready to retire, I don’t know if the market will enough for me to be able to retire.  I took vitamins, exercised, skipped eating red meat and fast food and I still have cancer.  I try with dieting follow the program and I still can’t lose those extra pounds. I read every assigned reading, thoroughly researched for every paper, and studied till all hours for every exam and still managed to end the school year with straight B’s.   I gave my marriage all I had and we still got divorced.  I increased my personal devotional life—prayer and the reading of Scripture and coming to church—and I still lust after one who is not my spouse, am given to fits of rage, am filled with hate.  We all know well what it’s like to recite this litany of despair.  We look around us, we look inside of us, and we see that there is nothing good, nothing but reasons to despair.  We want to take Jesus at His Word—try again and see if the results are different.  But everything comes up wrong, against us, and often, worse than it was before.  But in these times when despair threatens to gain the upper hand, we have no choice but to cling to the Lord and His gracious promises.  We have the example of Simon Peter.  He doesn’t want to listen to the Lord, but he does, and finds out that the Lord always keeps His promises.  And that is the same thing we find here in the Divine Service.  Our environments, our emotions, our feelings, our reason all deceive us, so we must hear, over and over again, the Word of the Lord repeating the promises He has made from the beginning.---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. When Isaiah “saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up,” he was overcome with an awareness of his sin and “unclean lips” (Is. 6:1, 5). But the Lord atoned for his sin, took away his guilt and sanctified his lips with “a burning coal” from the altar (Is. 6:6–7). Not only was he rescued from death, but he was called and sent as a prophet of the Lord’s Word (Is. 6:8–9). Similarly, when Simon Peter and his companions “enclosed a large number of fish” at the Word of Jesus, he humbled himself and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:4–8). But Jesus comforted Simon, called him to discipleship and declared that he would be “catching men” (Luke 5:10–11). So in the Office of the Ministry, the Church remains the little boat from which Jesus teaches His people (Luke 5:3). Thus are we instructed in the faith, so that we say “Amen” and return thanks with heart, mind, tongue and life. For the preaching of Christ Jesus is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit, by which He builds up His Church on earth (1 Cor. 14:12–19).---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Our faith is not in our faith.  It is in the first-hand knowledge of God made manifest to us in and through the God Man, Jesus Christ.  Yet, our faith is more than knowledge.  You can have knowledge of someone without having a relationship. As James notes, “Even the demons believe in God.”  The demons know who Jesus is but have nothing to do with Him.  Likewise, Jesus doesn’t want us to have anything to do with the demons.  It’s why He silences them.  In addition to knowledge, faith has to do with ascent.  Does this information raise our understanding? For example, does who Jesus is and what He does raise us up to a better understanding of the identity of God? Finally, when we are looking at something that cannot be reproduced, an historical fact, we determine if the source is trustworthy. All knowledge is worthless if we do not trust that which we know.  Trust allows us to use our knowledge for our benefit.  If we don’t believe it, or, in other words, receive it, it does us no good.  Jesus’ preaching then, and now, is an epiphany of God we can trust that not only reveals who God is, but it connects us with Him and each other in a relationship that lasts forever.     ---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/ Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Jesus was sent to “preach the good news of the kingdom of God” (Luke 4:43). His preaching is an epiphany, or manifestation, of God because His Word reveals the authority of His cross and resurrection, by which He has atoned for the sins of the world. By the preaching of His Gospel in every place, He silences the unclean spirits and casts out demons, heals the diseases of body and soul, and restores life and health to His creation (Luke 4:40–41). For the sake of His divine love, He is “patient and kind” toward us; He “bears all things,” “endures all things” and delivers up His body to save us (1 Cor. 13:3–4, 7). So also for the sake of His love, He calls and sends His prophets, as ministers of His Word, “to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant” (Jer. 1:10).---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/ Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Jesus has gifts for you. He has come here to this church, today, and has spoken to you. And not only spoken to you, but shined the light of His love upon you, washing you, forgiving you, feeding you, and giving you life. He comes to you, when you’re poor because you’ve spent your life chasing what doesn’t last. He comes to you, when you’re captive to your sinful urges and desires. He comes to you, when you’re blinded by the glory of this world and deafened by the so-called wisdom of this world. He comes to you, when you’re oppressed by satan, and by others satan uses in his oppressive regime in this dark world. Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing for Jesus is here with all His gifts for you. To shine upon you. To proclaim to you a year, a lifetime, an eternity of the Lord’s favor.
