Sermon: Follow the Blood

The phrase “follow the money”, refers to the fact that people do things, including bad things, mainly to benefit themselves. So, if you want to find out what they did and why, as the phrase reminds us, “follow the money.” Due to our fallen nature, we are always asking ourselves, “what’s in it for me?” What benefit is there for me by engaging in a particular action? Today, on All Saints’ Day, we are encouraged to “follow the blood.” Follow the blood of Jesus Christ which flows from His side to the altar and from there into the chalice, and from there into the mouths, hearts, and lives of God’s saints. Bible Study: Follow the Blood

“A great multitude … from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages,” cry out, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne” (Rev. 7:9–17). Faith-filled saints from every place and time, with unified voices, eternally magnify the Lamb of God. As His beloved children, we, too, “shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:1–3). Joined with the throng of angels and myriad saints, we shall “serve him day and night in his temple” (Rev. 7:9–17). In our earthly tension vacillating between saint and sinner, faith and doubt, sacred and profane, we earnestly seek Jesus to calm our fears, comfort our spirits and forgive our sins. The Holy Spirit through faith in Christ propels us forward, fortifying us in Word and Sacrament, to our eternal home. Amid our constant struggle as believers, we need to be blessed. And so, we are. Sermon: From Fear to Faith

There is only one word that can fell the devil and still our fears and that is the Word made flesh - Jesus!  The devil is a liar!  But he is done! He has been defeated by Christ’s death and resurrection. Listen to the Word that Jesus speaks to you today!  “Fear not! Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ your Lord.”  “Fear not! is Risen just as He said!”  He lives and reigns to all eternity.   “The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it.  He’s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit.  And take they all our life, goods fame, child and wife, though these all be gone our victory has been won. Bible Study: From Fear to Faith

“Wisdom is justified by her deeds” (Matt. 11:19), and the true Wisdom of God, Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son, has justified us by His deeds. He prepares His way by the preaching of repentance, but He has suffered the violence of the Law and voluntarily handed Himself over to violent men, that we might eat and drink with Him in His Kingdom and “remain in the house forever” (John 8:35). He is “a friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matt. 11:18–19), and He has rescued us by His grace from the slavery of sin and death. By the proclamation of His eternal Gospel “to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people” (Rev. 14:6), “the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law” (Rom. 3:21), “that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26). Sermon: The Eyes of Faith

Bible Study: The Eyes of Faith

As He did for blind Bartimaeus, so does the Lord, Jesus Christ, have mercy upon you. With His Word of the Gospel, “he is calling you” to Himself, to “take heart,” to rise up and live by faith in His forgiveness. He opens your heart and mind to see and know God rightly in Him and to follow Him “on the way” of the cross and into life everlasting (Mark 10:49–52). “He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him,” because He is the great High Priest, who offered Himself “once for all” as a sacrifice for sins. Since He is risen from the dead and “exalted above the heavens,” He “holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever,” and “he always lives to make intercession” for His people (Heb. 7:24–27). Sermon: Who Do You Know Wants to Be Saved?

“Who do you know wants to buy a car?”  This phrase was part of an advertising campaign when I was growing up that caught peoples’ attention.  It was everywhere, kind of like “One call, that’s all.”  The owner of the car dealership wanted you and your friends to go to “Main Street in Menomonee Falls” so that you would purchase your cars from him.  Today we might ask, “Who do you know wants to be saved?”  The rich young man wanted to be saved but didn’t like the price.  Others don’t think they need to be saved while there are some who are considered not worth saving.  Jesus wants all people to be saved, including you.  It’s why He paid the price for our sin with His death.  It’s why He comes here today to personally deliver this salvation to each and every one of us by His Spirit at work through His Word.   ---------Visit our website: https://www.trinitysheboygan.org/​​​​Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Bible Study: Who Do You Know Wants to Be Saved?

To love and trust in earthly wealth is vanity. For nothing of this earth will last forever, nor can any of it grant eternal life (Eccl. 5:10). But the one who trusts in God is “occupied with joy in his heart” and can sleep in peace, “whether he eats little or much,” because he knows that the “days of his life” are “the gift of God” (Eccl. 5:12, 18–20). The person who trusts in riches cannot sleep, because he “shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand” (Eccl. 5:15). Therefore, it is difficult “for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God” (Mark 20:23). Indeed, it is impossible for man, yet “all things are possible with God” (Mark 20:27). Thus, the Rich Man, Jesus Christ, has made Himself poor and has gone through “the eye of a needle,” through death and the grave, “to enter the kingdom of God” on our behalf (Mark 20:24–25). Sermon: Jesus Gives Up All

Where am I going when I die? How will I get there? Any thoughtful person has asked such questions. In today's gospel lesson, a rich young man asks Jesus a similar question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus' answer provides little comfort: “keep all the commandments, sell everything you have, and come follow me.” The truth is, Jesus really means it. If we are seeking to save ourselves, absolute perfection is required. This is not good news! Look in the mirror. Do you see any perfection there? Thanks be to God that Jesus did perfectly keep all the commandments, give up everything he had in heaven, and came to earth to follow his Father's will. Bible Study: Jesus Gives Up All

The Lord is the Author and Giver of life, as well as a consuming fire of judgment against all “who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate” (Amos 5:12). “Seek the LORD and live,” therefore, by hating what is evil, loving what is good and doing what is just and right, according to His Word. “And so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you” (Amos 5:6, 14–15). Understand that “no one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). The life that you are called to live is found neither in your “great possessions,” nor in your good works, but only in Christ Jesus.
