Bible Study: Be Careful What You Wish For | Mark 6:14-29 | The Death of John the Baptist

King Herod’s lust, pride and probably his consumption of one too many drinks at his own party, made him speak words he would later regret. To impress his guests he made a vow to his niece who had just danced for him, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you. Up to half my kingdom.” There’s an old saying, “Be careful what you wish for.” 
Herod’s niece didn’t know what to ask for, so she wished for what her adulterous mother wanted, namely, the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Caught in his own bravado and not wanting to look bad in front of his guests, Herod granted her wish. This wish of Herodias spoken through her daughter silenced the only one around who was telling her the truth of her sin. Getting what she wished for led to the continued impenitence and condemnation of herself and Herod. Sermon: Jesus Authorized Them | Mark 6:1-13 | Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Jesus authorized His disciples to say and do what He said and did. That was the scope of their authority. He does the same for you and your pastors whom God has called and ordained to serve you. Sermon: Three Daughters | Mark 5:21-43 | Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

At the end of the day here’s what you need to know and believe. Have no fear, have faith in Jesus who has conquered sin and death for you. He became sin for you; He died your death for you. He rose from the dead for you. He reigns in highest heaven for you. He comes to you in Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and His Holy Word. These are the humble robes you can touch and be healed with. 
And on the last day Jesus will reach down to where you lie in the sleep of death like Jairus’ little daughter. Sermon: Learning About Jesus | Mark 4:35-41 | Jesus Calms a Storm

One of the things we learn from this incident on the Sea of Galilee is that the disciples still have a lot to learn about Jesus. To be a disciple means that you are a learner. So it was with the twelve. So it is with us. They were not disciples, and we are not disciples, because of what we know, but rather we are disciples because we need to continue to learn and grow in our understanding of who Jesus is and what He means for our lives.
