One of the things we learn from this incident on the Sea of Galilee is that the disciples still have a lot to learn about Jesus. To be a disciple means that you are a learner. So it was with the twelve. So it is with us. They were not disciples, and we are not disciples, because of what we know, but rather we are disciples because we need to continue to learn and grow in our understanding of who Jesus is and what He means for our lives. It is a lifetime endeavor, a venture that brings innumerable blessings into our hearts and lives, and into the hearts and lives of others.-----Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” We don’t rely on what we see or what we know or how we might improve on and do better than God! We simply rely on the promises of God.
It’s His seed, His Word, His gifts, His kingdom, His plants, His children, His harvest, His work. He has shown and proved across the centuries and the millennia, He will make it grow and flourish. Sometimes in spite of us. Sometimes after we’ve messed it up pretty bad. Sometimes when we least expect it. Sometimes how we least expect it and sometimes where we least expect it.-----Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. “Out of the depths I cry to you,” writes the psalmist. Trapped in the depths of sin and death, we become painfully aware that we cannot save ourselves. Yet when out of the depths of despair, we cry out to the Lord, our Father in heaven hears our cry. He, who sent Jesus into the depths of our sin and death, reaches down His hand in Christ to lift us up to new life with Him and each other.-----Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. There are days when our lives seem so cracked and broken. Paul puts it this way, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.” We carry around Jesus’ death. Perhaps you are thinking what in the world does this even mean? Because I carry Jesus’ death around with me, you cannot kill me. Not ultimately anyway. Because I carry Jesus’ death around with me, you can knock me down but not out; you can throw me into the deepest pit, but I will never be abandoned; you can do your level worst to me, but I have the security that makes me rise above it all. I carry around with me the worst thing that ever happened to anyone anywhere, the death of God’s own Son on a tree.
So, the worst you can do to me still is not as bad as what happened to Jesus. I am baptized into Christ! Nothing will separate me from His love not even death! You are in Christ Jesus, and you will live! As the hymn writer put it: “In Thine arms I rest me; Foes who would molest me Cannot reach me here, Though the earth be shaking, Every heart be quaking, Jesus calms my fear. Lightings flash and thunders crash; Yet, though sin and hell assail me, Jesus will not fail me! Hence, all fear and sadness! For the Lord of gladness, Jesus enters in.
Those who love the father, Though the storms may gather, Still have peace within. Yes, whate’er I must bear, Thou art still my purest pleasure, Jesus priceless treasure!” LSB #743-----Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting.
